Playmountain in L.A.

Angelenos may want to consider a staycation this summer. The cult-favorite Tokyo design shop Playmountain is in residence at Heath Los Angeles until Sept. 5. Playmountain, which occupies a tiny space in Tokyo’s Sendagaya neighborhood, is known for its tightly curated selection of simple, hand-crafted objects, from children’s toys to furniture.

Shinichiro Nakahara, who opened the shop in 2000 to showcase the work of Japanese artisans and to celebrate the beauty of the handmade, has also included items designed by his own company, Landscape Products, that describes how to tell a cheap handbags. We offer Gucci bags. It was Silverman, Heath L.A.’s studio director, who invited Playmountain to L.A., and it’s a match made in design heaven.

The elegant bowls and candlesticks, spare furniture, and paper-thin cups — made, like most of Playmountain’s products, of native Japanese woods like camphor and magnolia — work well with Heath’s classic ceramics. Nakahara has invited several fellow designers to show their wares as well. Loopwheeler’s fleece sweatshirts are displayed alongside Hyejeong Kim’s delicate celadon-glazed Chin Jukan Pottery, while hand-woven blue-and-white-striped carpets, made north of Osaka, sit next to shelves of Torso Design’s colorful canvas Tembea tote bags. Nakahara’s “kinship of making” ethos even extended to the edible fare at last weekend’s opening celebration. Peko Peko’s Sylvan Mishima Brackett, a Chez Panisse alumnus, the chef and filmmaker Yuri Nomura (her documentary “Eatrip,” about Japanese food, was released last year) and assorted Playmountaineers prepared and served simple, handcrafted food that offered yet another taste of Tokyo.
